Author Profile
Xiong Yongquan, also styled as Xiaoyun, courtesy name Moyuanren, and online alias Xiangdu Jushi, is a native of Yandu, Yancheng, Jiangsu Province. He was born in the second lunar month of 1962, a time of balmy spring and bright scenery. With a college education, he works as a freelancer.
From an early age, Mr. Xiong has been passionately fond of calligraphy, painting and literature, having a deep obsession with both literary and artistic pursuits. He has always been an avid reader, often wandering in bookstores and lingering in libraries. He has immersed himself profoundly in classic masterpieces such as The Four Great Classical Novels as well as the field of children’s literature. Even in his youth, he showed remarkable literary talent—he once contributed to Civilization magazine and served as a journalist and editor for Market Information News. His writings are imbued with both the warmth of documentary realism and profound humanistic feelings. In 1987, he was admitted to the first training course of Yancheng Branch of China Correspondence University of Calligraphy and Painting, where he devoted himself to the study of calligraphy and painting for three years, laying a solid foundation for his future artistic career.
Throughout his life journey, Mr. Xiong has experienced all sorts of hardships and joys: he has worked diligently in the fields, personally experiencing the toil of farming; he has engaged in township enterprises, tempering his practical capabilities; he has delved into edible fungus cultivation, exploring the path of entrepreneurship; he has also worked as a migrant worker in southern Jiangsu, taking in the local customs and practices of foreign lands. After the household contract responsibility system was implemented in rural areas, leveraging his expertise in calligraphy and painting, he ran a business producing glass-painted central scroll artworks for eight years, depicting the delights of life with exquisite craftsmanship. Later, he joined New China Life Insurance, serving in an external position for a decade, and honed his sense of responsibility in the workplace. Despite the hustle and bustle of making a living, Mr. Xiong has never abandoned his pursuit of art. He has been a regular student at the Municipal University for the Elderly, nurturing his mind and spirit through calligraphy, painting, poetry and verse.
Today, Mr. Xiong has carved out a poetic haven amid the humdrum of daily life—he cultivates flowers and plants to delight his heart, and indulges in poetry, calligraphy and painting to refine his temperament, keeping a peaceful mind amid the hustle and bustle of the world. He firmly believes in "cherishing the present and looking forward to the future", and upholds the philosophy of "living a simple life to cultivate noble aspirations and accumulating virtue to carry great things". His soul is elevated through the integration of nature and art, and he writes an unhurried and fulfilling artistic life with every stroke of his brush.
