How many times was the Polygonum flower beautiful .
During self_study sessions , I often thought :
How long was that Liao River exactly ?
How tall was that Yunfeng Pagoda exactly ?
Male and female classmates going for a walk and climbing together ,
How wonderful it would be .
In the blink of an eye , three years had passed ,
In a hurry – too late to take a spring outing along the Liaoshui River ,
Too late to climb the Yunfeng Pagoda for a lofty view .
Three repetitions of the Yangguan tune ,
Sadly parting at Huilan Bridge ,
We went to the ends of the earth and the Three Great Mountains and Five Great Peaks .
I had traveled thousands of miles , yet still could not escape the embrace of my alma mater .
The moon of the Liao River and the clouds of the Yunfeng Pagoda often appeared in my dreams ;
In my dreams , the graceful figure of the teacher and the smiling faces of classmates often appeared .
In the blink of an eye , one reached middle age .
We agreed to return to our alma mater in thirty yeas .
Might you return as a young man after wandering half a lifetime .
Young minds should go and get the clouds .
Unfulfilled ambitions , how ridiculous I was .
The students' emotions and thoughts were entrusted to the waning and full moons .
Tall trees formed a forest , and my classmates were all heroes of our time .

Upon closer inquiry , most of our course instructors had already passed away .
Prosperity was but a dream ;

And life made it hard to return to one's alma mater .
The innocent school belles , had you married the handsome school beaus ?
I didn't know how long the Liao River was .
I didn't know how tall Yunfeng Pagoda was .
I only heard the sound of reading aloud on campus ,
Just like the surging waves of the Liao River .
I only saw the wind playing with clouds atop Yunfeng Tower ,
As if white clouds were drifting through my chest .
