我和父亲睡在几根杆搭成的二楼
三四岁的我
抬头看到漏下的月光
秧田传来一片蛙声
回想白天父亲在水沟用手捧到一条鱼
我幼小的心乐开了花
第一次离开家的我
胆小,怕黑,怕旷野
父亲似乎猜透了我的心思
拍拍我
不一会我进入梦乡
等醒来
天已大亮

A Summer Night
(In Memory of Father)

A solitary simple earthen house by Baqing River,
Father and I slept on the second floor, built with a few poles.
I was only three or four years old,
Looking up, I saw moonlight leaking through the cracks.
From the rice paddies came a chorus of frog songs.
I recalled how Father had cupped a fish from the ditch with his hands that day—
My young heart burst with joy.
It was my first time away from home;
I was timid, afraid of the dark, afraid of the wilderness.
Father seemed to sense my unease,
Patting me gently.
Before long, I drifted into dreams.
When I awoke,
The sky was already bright.
