Ode to Chrysanthemums (To the Tune of "Xing Xiang Zi")
By Hua Nongnong (Shangguan)
Sept. 5, 2025
Golden stamens hang low,
Jade-like dewdrops cold and clear.
Blooming by the eastern fence,
They glisten like twinkling stars.
Purple petals spread wide,
Green leaves stand graceful and neat.
Behold! Butterflies flit around,
Bees dance busily,
And their shadows sway softly.
They shine bright beneath the frost,
Glow fresh after the rain.
Holding fast to their quiet integrity,
With stems green as jade, tall and straight.
The west wind blows gently,
Stealing forth their faint sweet scent.
At dawn, they catch the dew;
At noon, they bathe in the sun;
At dusk, they bear the cold.
