《Spring, Mother's Silhouette》
The misty spring grass was sprouting in the northern mountains, irresistible to Mother as she moved in slow and hesitant steps. The nearby stream flowed and spread across the frozen river, giggling and melting the sparkling ice and snow.
The wind was breezy and sun light warm on the skin. Mother bent over, searching th e grass. The green was still patchy on the slopes and trees barren. Once in a while, a flock of chickadees would fly over the horizon and land on the stripped branches. Mother paid no attention, entirely focused on the green in front of her.
Down the slope with the wind came the delightful fragrance of the spring grass. Mother straightened up and took some deep breath as if to take in the sweetness of the fresh green. I called her from a distance, my voice soft, husky and intoxicating like the mountain mist. Mother glanced over, as if listening to the whisper of the wind. She then ignored me and bent down again, moving around slowly.
From the distance, I could see Mother’s gray hair fluttering in the breeze. An image of her youthful self with lusty black hair came to my mind. It caught me by surprise and got me misty-eyed. Mother loved the early spring when the days were still cold though getting warmer. She loved the winding trails and the gentle beauty of the spring mountains. Mother grew up in those mountains, and her affection for the peaks and valleys was profound. She knew so much about the mushrooms, edible herbs and wild flowers, and much more.
The slopes basked in the high noon sun. Mother bent over, caressing the land she felt akin to. The mountain breeze, winding and whirling along the rugged trails, lifted Mother’s hemline and ruffled her gray hair. She straightened her back again and looked towards the sun, smiles curling her lips. Maybe she’s murmuring to herself or humming a folk song.
For a moment, all the earthly beauty of this world looked pale against the image of my mother standing on that mountain slope. She’s so removed from the clamoring of urban life and her silhouette an embodiment of spring. She’s surrounded by what she loved the most about the northern mountains: the elegant beauty, the dreamy morning mist, the peaceful night and the sprouting spring treasure.
The edible wild herbs were the first to germinate and break through the soil as the early spring breeze arrived. They used to provide for the hungry villagers, and Mother was a beneficiary during those hard times. Nowadays, wild herbs were no longer the food sustaining the livelihood of those living in the mountains. Instead, they became the treasured delicacies of the city dwellers.
Here came my mother, unhurried and dream-like, carrying a full basket of edible wild herbs…… Spring, Mother's SilhouetteSpring, Mother's SilhouetteSpring, Mother's SilhouetteSpring, Mother's Silhouette.
