Lantern
By Ken Fan
Translated by Ken Fan
They say,
Death is just all darkness,
Only the soul remains.
Darkness petrifies,
Because it's similar to death.
There would be still things on earth,
Which are, nonetheless, equivalent to none.
No one can see anything,
Humble ones can't,
Neither can the nobles.
Darkness has equalized everyone.
Darkness is eternal,
Hence it's pursued by no one.
Brightness is brief,
Brevity is to be desired for.
In that pitch-black cave,
Nobody knows how many are in there,
Nobody recalls how long this has been.
Eyes all wide open,
But only face a perpetual darkness.
Suddenly, a trembling mumble:
-- That man, with a lantern,
Will still come?
Becoming desperate.
Don't care,
Whoever you are,
Wherever you'd take us,
Once you've got a lantern.
We will follow you,
As long as we can catch last ray of sunlight...
