Life is Wire Walking
(Five Poems)
by Wei Yanlie
Tr. by Wang Changling
1、 The Eyebrow
Don’t ever mention
The eyebrow locked by lovesickness
It’s like a shoulder pole
Bent with an eyeful of tears
Or rather like a broken bridge at sunset
Beneath, a river blocks a full moon
Looking into a broken mirror
You gently pencil your eyebrows
And gently draw the bow of yearning
Yet unable to release
The rusty arrow stuck in your heart
2、 Life is Wire Walking
A road
Raised high
Upon the shoulders of two mountains
Is very much like a wire
Upon which life is hanging
Even the slightest breeze
Swings it
With undivided attention
You still find it challenging to keep balance
You’re shifting your weight
Slightly to the left or to the right
With one careless slip
You’ll drop into the void
3、 Life
The body is bent
In the womb
It takes all it can to stand up
And again the burden of living
Re-bends it
Sometimes it has to
Bend lower and lower
Living
Is like an iron wire
Twisted back and forth by days
Until the wire loses all its flexibility
Until it stiffens
And dies
And lies flat in a coffin
4、Spring Rides an Ox
Cold, like an arrow
Stabs askew in the back of Mt. Kunlun
Wind with all its might, shakes it
Yet unable to pull it out
Sunshine attempts to
Take off my lambskin coat
A few sneezes
Withdraw my out-stretched hands
A cloud
Tiptoes on the thin ice
Slips
And gets washed away by the melting ice flow
Spring riding an ox
Starts its journey from Xi’ning
Along the Tang-Tibet Ancient Road
And snails
5、The Wintry Grassland
Winter assisted by wind
Scales hills upon hills
Like a hungry swarm of locusts
Eating up the autumn hue left in the grassland
An uninvited fall of snow
Destroys all the evidence
The boundless sky
Is empty except for an eagle
Upon whose chilly wings
Float a few cloudlets
Pillowing the ridge
The sleepwalking dream
Is sound asleep
A lonely pathlet
Walks out of the besiegement of night
Yet not out of its inner loneliness
