Listening to the Rain
—To the Tune of Immortal by the River
By PAN Yuezhong
Tr. SHU Enjiang
Outdoors the wind consumes the night so deep;
The wild spouse I seek—a tryst to keep.
A sudden thunder rends the lovebird pair.
Washed by rain, our tryst brings despair;
Lost and alone, each goes elsewhere.
Awake, alone—I know it's but a dream;
Only the rain keeps its rampant stream.
Back to the dream I grope, yet grieve in vain.
Child in arms, I hear leak in pane;
Drip, drop, till daylight breaks again.
