Today is the World Book and Copyright Day. And I happened to sign the follow passage as an assignement to the students. It’s about books the writer got from his Dad and what they influence him. This is a very good example for us to know the benifits we can get from books. Now let me read the passage to you。
The Books from Dad
"You can have my books. "
That was Dad, a year before he died.
I took after Dad in many ways, some of which I didn't really notice until after he died. It is funny because now the similarities seem so clear. There are the big ears, and the preference for classical music. And there are the books.
As a teen, I discovered James Baldwin on Dad's bookshelf. I was too young to understand his books, but they were a gateway to other great authors. I got into the habit of seeking books on Dad's bookshelf. The habit shaped me as a reader. I developed the wish for books. I often go to bookstores and look for books.
My book collection strengthened by the books I've inherited from Dad, brings me joy. I think I'm the keeper of something valuable and that if in the future a reader needs a book that's gone out of print, I could provide it. Some of Dad's books are broken. It seemed Dad bought them when he was a student, which explains the brittle yellow pages. But they are still important because they are Dad's books. Since he gave them to me, it is my job to care for them until they are passed down. Who knows when someone will need them?
I've learned a lot about Dad since he died because I continue to understand Dad through his books. I see each one as an important thing to know the person he was. There are many things we didn't talk about. We never talk about our preferences. I don't know what kind of books he enjoyed. While there are many chats I wish we'd had. I'm happy to have his books because I see the collection he left behind as a way to know him better.
