The Wanshan Stone Bridge in My Heart
By Yu Wenhe
Every time I return to my hometown,
Waves rise in my heart,
My steps unconsciously lead me
Back onto the Wanshan Stone Bridge.
This stone bridge
Is my hometown’s shining calling card,
Its unique seal.
Even if I wander the world,
Drift across the seas,
The stone bridge of my hometown
Is always engraved in my heart.
Though only 40.1 meters long,
This bridge was once a key passage on Fuyu’s northern route.
It is also the earliest highway bridge in Jilin’s history.
As the years pass,
Its past glory
Will forever be inscribed in Chinese history.
Now, though out of use for years,
It still shines with undying light.
Stably spanning Jiajin Gouzi,
It is like a silent and wise elder,
Quietly telling tales of past glory and the vicissitudes of time.
On the south side of the bridge,
Are engraved the words “Heaven and Earth Endure Together, Wanshan Stone Bridge”;
On the north side, “Eternal Fragrance Through Generations”
Also glows brightly.
Whenever I gaze at these indelible characters,
The stories of Wu Shouren, Shi Hongfan, and Yu Mingyuan
Come to mind.
This bridge
Rewrote the history of Li’s Tofu Workshop,
An ancient and true story of good deeds
That has been passed down through generations across China.
I still remember childhood days,
Sitting on a horse-drawn cart,
Crossing this bridge for the first time.
The wheels rolled over the stone slabs,
Their clear sound
Like a unique melody
Playing in my heart,
Unforgotten to this day.
In my dreams, I often see waves lapp ing the bridge’s spine,
And hear the waves chanting tales of the past.
Morning mist spreads over the bridge like sheer silk,
Mountain flowers whisper by its side,
Colorful butterflies dance,
Bees play spring melodies,
Red willows hang graceful branches,
Dipp ing into the shallow stream
To write the most beautiful lines of spring.
I have seen
Grass quietly peeking through stone cracks,
Curiously gazing at the world.
Dandelion fluff
Lightly drifts across the bridge,
Chasing dreams of freedom
Toward the distance.
I have heard
Frogs whispering with river stones,
Their soft voices
Weaving a lullaby
That accompanied my dreamlike childhood.
I witnessed a post-rain dusk,
A rainbow like a bridge
Arch ing above the Wanshan Stone Bridge—
That dreamlike beauty
Remains unforgettable.
Now, gray hair has quietly climbed my brow,
Yet the sound of Jiajin Gouzi’s flowing water
Grows clearer in my ears.
Though memories are slightly blurred,
The scenery of my hometown
Still shines in my heart.
Every time I leave my hometown,
My steps feel especially heavy.
Looking back at the bridge’s familiar form,
Tears involuntarily blur my eyes.
And the water under the bridge
Still rushes forward,
Carrying the bridge’s reflection
And my homesickness
Into the long years,
Toward a poetic distance.
Hometown, you are like the Big Dipper in the sky,
Forever guiding my path forward.
You are like the Mid-Autumn Moon,
Forever shining in my tender heart.
Wanshan Stone Bridge,
You are my eternal watch in heart.
No matter where I drift in the world,
I will never forget you.
You carry my past,
And light my future.
Every wave in Jiajin Gouzi
Is the softest echo
From the depths of my soul.
Wanshan Stone Bridge, my hometown,
You are like a seal with warmth,
Deeply impressed on my heart.
You have branded the eaves wrapped in cooking smoke,
The kind dialects of elders calling,
Deep into the recesses of memory,
As the most precious treasure in my life.
You are also like an old thread-bound book,
Every page hiding the chirp ing of cicadas and birds,
Warm stories of autumn harvests and winter stores.
The more I flip through, the more I touch the innocence of childhood—
A beautiful gift from time,
Never fading,
Forever cherished.
Wanshan Stone Bridge,
You are my hometown.
Like an aged jar of wine,
The longer I stay away,
The more the mellow scent of earth and human warmth
Lingers in my heart,
Forever exuding a soothing aroma.
The Wanshan Stone Bridge in my heart,
Is my hometown, engraved on my heart,
Unforgettable in this lifetime.
