In Hunan and Jiangxi flags for victory were flying，
In Huining City, the great Red armies were meeting.
It defeated the Japs after eight long years of fighting，
In the fall, it stormed and occupied “capital” Nanjing.
To aid Korea, American aggression it was resisting，
And by defending the territory, honor it is displaying.
As its heroic spirit shines, the enemies it is terrifying，
Our motherland will forever prosper with its blessing!

Haiwang Yuan is an American writer, translator, and sinologist. He is an Emeritus Professor of WKU and a Guest Professor of Foreign Languages College, Nankai University. He has authored a dozen English monographs, including This is China: the First 5000 Years, Learning Chinese Through Classic Chinese, and Chinese Folktale series. He has translated such famous Chinese writers as Zhang Wei, Su Tong, Zhao Benfu, Xu Huaizhong, and Zhou Daxin.
