Father's Medal
By Han Jin (China)
Tr.ZhongQuan (US)
On the centenary of the founding of the party, party members who have reached the age of 50 years are issued with a commemorative medal to commend them for not forgetting their original aspirations and keeping their mission in mind. The medal has a diameter of 50 mm, made of copper and zinc alloy, and the main colors are red and gold. The main section of the medal displays party emblems, that is: five-pointed stars, flags, monuments, sunflowers and other elements. The big characters on the medal are particularly eye-catching: Glory to the party for 50 years.
My dad has been in the party for 59 years. When I helped him to apply for the medal, he was very excited and told me about his experience of joining the party! In 1962, my father’s regiment received the command to urgently prepare for war. The situation along the southeast coast was tense, so they immediately went to the front line. Dad and his comrades were sent to Longyan in Fujian and were transported by freight train. On arrival they were greeted with heavy rain and thunder and lightning, as it was the typhoon season. They marched hurriedly to their destination in heavy rain where they were required to repair electric supply lines with local militiamen. This helped them with military training and practising together. My father wrote a song of praise comparing the relationship of fish and water to that between the military and civilians!
Some of the soldiers who came to the front line were young, raw recruits. These ‘boys' still had an adolescent character and were playful and mischievous. A total of 40 such recruits were handed over to my dad’s command. In addition, differing from person to person, my dad had to deal with ideology as well as requiring strict obedience from his trainees. Training was very hard, with 13 emergency training sessions to deal with each day... Later, these soldiers became the backbone of the force. Dad also joined the Communist Party of China on the front line because of his outstanding performance. Later, such ‘backbone’ troops were transferred to local areas, some becoming top businessmen, and yet others became leaders of elite cadres, and many more became advanced workers.... Dad made a great contribution.
Over the years, as a military writer, my father has not forgotten his original aspirations. Keeping his mission in mind, my dad went to troops on the border to experience their life, interviewing many heroes, unknown and selfless soldiers. He published many articles and tributes to the motherland: praising heroes and the party. These military works reflect the noble sentiments of an old soldier and an old party member.
My father has been a member of the party for 59 years, and this medal is the best compliment and affirmation for his adherence to communism and his original intentions! Dad said excitedly: I am an orphan and eternally grateful to the Chinese Communist Party. Without the Communist Party, there would be no New China, and I would have been no one without it! We are firm in our belief that communism will remain unchanged for life!
