Bird Island - the paradise in my dream
Author: Hanjin (China)
English translation: Zhongquan (U.S.)
In late October last year, on a beautiful autumn day, I went to "Bird Island" in the upper reaches of the Hun River in Shenyang, my hometown. After getting off the sightseeing bus, a long pedestrian plank road came into view. Several clusters of weed in the sparkling water swayed in the autumn wind. The surroundings were very quiet and the air had such a sweet aroma that breathing it in was so refreshing.
The scenery seems to fly past as you walk along the plank road all the way to the west gate of Bird Island. Entering the scenic spot, a long bridge crosses over to the island. Standing on the bridge and looking out, the water of Hun River, the blue water ripples beneath as it slowly flows. Bird Island, the place I dream of, I was there at last. I could feel you with my heart!
A group of peculiar looking chickens with thick feathers searched for food on the grass. Some were white, some grey, others black. Their heads and necks were red, and they had wattles under their necks, which varied from red to purple. When I took a picture of one, it raised its head and looked very cooperative. It turned out that it was a turkey!
Peacocks were eating bugs in the grass. They interacted with people at close range - without any fear. There were also two peacocks perching on tall branches. This was the first time I had seen a peacock on a tree!
Facing the warm autumn sun, I saw a tall old tree tied with a red ribbon. Legend has it that it was planted by Emperor Qianlong, to signify peace and longevity. For hundreds of years, it has guarded Bird Island, and later generations called it "Qianlong Shenliu".
We continued to move forward and saw the sunflower-crested cockatoo in a large cage. It is a species introduced from abroad and s distributed in Indonesia, Australia, and some small island countries. It is very beautiful, with red, orange, yellow, blue, and white feathers mixed together. With a hooked mouth it, makes a "Ko, ko" sound. When it is angry, its crown is erected in a fan shape, like a blooming sunflower!
The African ostrich is tall and handsome. With long legs and a long neck, it stands near to the barrier allowing people to take close-up photos. A group of ostriches ran wildly as if the African savannah was before my eyes. They can run at 70 kilometres per hour, with 8 meter strides in one step, and jump 3.5 meters.
There were other birds such as red-crowned cranes and owls, and many birds that I didn’t know well. However, my favourite is the swan. In an area of water on the east side of Bird Island, there are many white swans and black swans. The warm, late autumn sun shone on the tranquil water, which reflects the weeping willows on the shore. The swan stretched its long neck, reminding me of Tchaikovsky’s "Dance of the cygnets". The swans here are tame and people are very friendly with them. The biggest and most beautiful swan came ashore, craned it’s neck, and used its long beak to take a cabbage leaf from a little girl's hand. When another lady offered it a piece of cake, it threw away the cabbage to grab the cake. It turns out that the swan also has human characteristics, and I also know that cake is more delicious and interesting!
Two black swans went ashore to beg for food, and at the same time, swan-geese also swam in groups. For a time, a very lively scene of interaction between birds and people was formed.
The feathers of the white swan are as white as snow, and the feathers of the black swan are as black as satin, and its neck is soft and slender, like an elegant young woman. The swans roamed on the water, quietly and so dignified. On this autumn evening, the sunset reflected the weeping willows, and a pool of afterglow was scattered on the calm water. There was an inseparable pair of snow-white swans with their necks held high, staring proudly into the distance. They floated on the water like two huge white lotuses. It is said that the swan is very loyal in love. If one partner dies, the other will not take another mate.
There was a faint cloud on the horizon, and the setting sun went down. I walked on the finely broken leaves, watching the yellow ginkgo trees sway in the wind, listening to the autumn rhyme of birdsong; and my heart was full of joy!
